Plot:
Gordon Hocheiser (George Segal) is a lawyer living in New York City who lives with his senile mother (Ruth Gordon). She ruins his life with her constant demands, but he will not put in a nursing home because of promise he made to his father on his deathbed to take care of his mother until the day she dies. Gordon's mother, Mrs. Hocheiser, doesn't realize that her husband 'Poppa' is dead and constantly asks for him. Because Gordon's brother Sidney (Ron Leibman) is married and won't take care of their mother, Gordon hires nurses. However, they all quit after spending time with her. This makes Gordon very upset, especially when he has romantic feelings on a nurse. Gordon hires Louise Callan (Trish Van Devere) to be Mrs. Hocheiser's nurse. They immediately fall in love with each other. Gordon asks her to come over for dinner for Mrs. Hocheiser will be present. During the dinner, Mrs. Hocheiser offends Louise so much that she flees from the apartment. Gordon phones Sidney and tells him to come over before he kills their month. As Sidney runs through Central Park, a street gang stops him and robs him of his wallet and clothes. However, Sidney arrives at Gordon's and promises to take on more of the burden of their mother's welfare. Gordon give Sidney a gorilla outfit to put on. A day or two later, Louise returns and again she and Gordon try to have a dinner together with his mother. Mrs. Hocheiser ruins everything yet again by pulling down her son's pants and kisses him on the "tush." Louise once again runs out. Gordon again calls Sidney to come over, and Sidney runs through Central Park in his gorilla outfit. The same street gang stops Sidney and makes him participate in a gang rape. Gordon goes to the police station to get Sidney out of jail. It turned out that he raped an undercover policeman in drag. However, the cop happens to be gay and has given Sidney flowers and won't press charges. Sidney willingly leaves the cop his home phone number. Gordon begins mentally falling apart. He can't conduct himself properly in court when he defends a coach who snatches 10-year-old kids without permission of their parents. Louise visits him in court. She says she is going back to her hometown in Illinois because she cannot compete with Gordon's mother. Gordon finally decides to take charge of his life. He packs up all of Mrs. Hocheiser's belongings, including her breakfast dishes. He tells her that he is taking here to see Poppa. Gordon and Louise drive her to Gus and Grace's Home for the Aged. Gordon wants to leave his mother there but the place is too despicable. They take her to a very nice home. Gordon signs the papers to get his mother committed. Afterwords, Gordon grabs an old man who happens by. The elderly man looks at Mrs. Hocheiser and asks "Momma?" Mrs. Hocheiser asks "Poppa?" Gordon and Louise jump back into their car and drive off.
