Plot:
Early forty-something Marlo is feeling overwhelmed in life. She has just given birth to her and her husband Drew's third child, Mia, the pregnancy unplanned, and Mia probably their last child in Marlo being close to the end of her fertile life. Marlo believes their oldest child, eight year old Sarah, needs her now more than ever in moving into a more grown up phase of her childhood. Their middle child, kindergarten student Jonah, is high maintenance, his behavioral problems which doctors have not been able to diagnose. Because of the disruptions Jonah makes in class, the school principal, Laurie, suggests that Jonah would benefit from a dedicated aide, all at Marlo and Drew's expense, such money they don't have in their middle class life. As such, Marlo has been searching the internet for home therapies in dealing with Jonah in the absence of therapists they can't afford. Drew and Marlo have a defined division of labor, Drew's responsibilities during this phase of their life which is focused more on being the breadwinner, his work which leaves Marlo with the bulk of the child rearing. As a baby gift, Marlo's well off brother and sister-in-law, Craig and Elyse, want to hire a night nanny for them, she who would do most of the baby care in the middle of the night while Marlo gets some much needed sleep. Initially resisting the idea in not wanting a stranger around, Marlo in her emotional breakdown, finally relents. Marlo ultimately comes to believe that the nanny, a young woman named Tully, is a godsend as she not only takes care of Mia, but believes that her responsibility is overall care for the family in they all being interconnected. Tully ends up being a sounding board for Marlo, the two who seem to have a certain symbiosis. However, Tully may be too much of of a good thing for this phase of Marlo's life.
