The Ritual

Earling, Iowa, 1928. The strange case of Emma Schmidt, a tormented woman showing mixed symptoms that blur the line between psychosis and possession, has caught the attention of the Church. Sixteen years after her initial exorcism, German-American Capuchin friar Theophilus Riesinger picks up where he left off to perform a second sacramental rite on Schmidt. Father Theophilus is at the head of the ritual, while Father Joseph Steiger oversees the exorcism. However, to have a fighting chance to expel the unholy spirits from Emma, the team must work in unison. After all, the unseen enemy will spare no effort to sow discord among them. But how will they confront pure evil when one of them is still grappling with his waning faith?
