Forever a Woman

Hokkaido, in northern Japan. Fumiko, a young mother of two small children, is trapped in an unhappy marriage. When she discovers her husband's infidelity, she files for divorce and sets out to start a new life with her children, whom she loves more than anything. When she loses custody of her son and can take only her daughter with her, a book club in town becomes her most important refuge. There, encouraged by Taku Hori, who writes poetry like her, she finds her poetic voice. As Fumiko finds herself increasingly drawn to Taku - who is married to her friend - she receives a diagnosis of late-stage breast cancer. Just as her poems are published, she is admitted to the hospital and must undergo a mastectomy. A journalist who writes about her in the newspaper and visits Fumiko in the hospital reignites passionate feelings within her. "The Eternal Breasts" recounts the final years of the Japanese poet Fumiko Nakajo, who died in 1954.
