Defeated by gambling and heavy drinking, Billy Flynn, a former boxing champion and now a washed-up horse trainer, is on the ropes. While barely managing to stay afloat, Billy's affluent former wife, Annie, who had abandoned him seven years ago, enters the picture, bent on getting their innocent eight-year-old son, T. J., back.
