North Sea

Sofia (Kristine Kujath Thorp) works for a company that manufactures state-of-the-art robotics. She lives with her boyfriend Stian (Hendrik Bjelland) and his son Odin (Nils Elias Olsen) in a house on the remote coast of Norway. Stian works on one of the offshore drilling platforms, 220 kilometers from the mainland. There, in the waters of the North Sea, the company SAGA, led by William Lie (Bjorn Floberg), is drilling for oil and gas. The exploitation of the vast energy reserves beneath the North Sea provides a livelihood for the people in the remote fjord regions and secures their future. When an accident occurs on one of the platforms, Sofia and her colleague Arthur (Rolf-Kristian Larsen) arrive with their robot to survey the area. Sofia guides the robot from the deck of a ship into the depths of a sunken oil rig. This allows her to search underwater for survivors in air pockets. They do indeed find someone, but before they can rescue the man, there is a massive gas explosion. The geologist from SAGA is concerned. Eight hundred years ago, there was a tectonic shift known as the Borrega Subsidence. Now, a similar environmental disaster on a much larger scale is looming. SAGA decides to evacuate its oil fields. Before doing so, the platforms must seal their wells. A technical malfunction on "Gullfaks A" causes Stian to descend alone into the depths to manually seal the hole. But he is unable to return in time to the evacuating helicopter. The drilling rig collapses, and masses of water flood into pipes and service shafts. Sofia, completely on her own, flies to "Gullfaks A" with Arthur and the small version of the search robot, with the help of Stian's sister, to look for Stian. When she finds him injured but alive, a happy outcome for the mission seems within reach. But then a wall of fire approaches the three of them on the remains of the platform, because SAGA, in consultation with the government, has set the massive oil slick on the sea ablaze to prevent it from reaching all the North Sea coastal states.
