Tarzan and His Mate

Englishman Harry Holt (Neil Hamilton) and Martin Arlington (Paul Cavanaugh) head a safari into the western African jungles in search of ivory. They are accompanies by African porters under the supervision of Saidi (Nathan Curry). A year earlier, while on another expedition, Harry had seen Jane (Maureen O'Sullivan), a woman he loved, leave him for Tarzan (Johnny Weissmuller), a man who has lived in the jungles and grown up with the apes. Harry has brought alone presents for Jane in hopes that she will return with him to civilization. He tells Arlington that perhaps Tarzan will lead them to an elephant burial ground near which Jane's father is buried. They will need Tarzan's help because men from another safari stole their maps. Deep in the jungle, Harry and Arlington discover that the other safari has been massacred by a savage tribe that now attacks them. They escape by climbing a mountain that natives think taboo and won't go near. But the safari is made the target of some huge boulder-hurling gorillas. Several of the African bearers are killed before the gorillas stop at the order of Tarzan, who comes flying through the trees. He is soon joined by Jane, who has learned to swing through the trees and has become accustomed to jungle life. Both Tarzan and Jane are happy to be reunited with Harry. That night, Jane tries on a beautiful dress that harry has brought her, but she insists that she has no intention of going back to England with him. Harry gives up trying to win her back. However, Arlington makes a play for her affections. Jane rejects him by saying that Tarzan is her man. Tarzan refuses to leads Harry and Arlington to the elephant burial ground. Arlington mortally wounds Timba, Tarzan's favorite elephant, knowing that it will walk back to the burial ground. Harry and Arlington arrive at the burial ground, where Timba dies. The start loading the ivory when Tarzan and Jane appear. Tarzan won't allow them to steal the elephant ivory for it belongs at the burial ground. Much to everyone's surprise, Arlington agrees to leave the ivory there. Jane visits her father's grave and gives Tarzan her father's pocket watch, which he promises to wear always. The next morning Arlington shoots Tarzan, who is fishing by a riverbank alone. He thinks that he has killed him, but doesn't see a hippo take the injured Tarzan from the water and deliver him to the apes and chimps, who then take him to a tree house and begin to nurse him back to health. Meanwhile, Arlington tells Jane that he saw Tarzan killed by a crocodile. When her father's watch is found in the river, Jane believes that Tarzan is dead and agrees to leave the jungle with Arlington and Harry, who also take along the ivory. Cheetah, Tarzan's chimpanzee friend, intercepts the departing safari and "tells" Jane that Tarzan is still alive. The safari is suddenly attacked by a savage tribe of African natives. Jane, Arlington and Harry take refuge in the rocks, while Cheetah runs to Tarzan for help. The African bearers are all killed and Saidi is taken prisoner. The savages, known as "Men Who Eat Lions" use drums to call lions into the area. The lions attack and eat the bearers and Saidi, and kill Harry when he tries to save Saidi. The lions then go after Jane and Arlington who is killed while protecting her. Tarzan then arrives with a herd of elephants that kill all of the lions. Chimpanzees led by Cheetah knock the savages from the trees to be eaten by other lions. In the final scene, Tarzan saves Jane who decides to stay in the jungle with him.
