Something Always Happens

Unemployed car salesman Peter Middleton has squandered away all his money gambling, but despite being jobless, penniless and thus homeless, he isn't overly concerned as he always does his best when he is under pressure to perform. That pressure is increased when he meets and takes under his care a street urchin named Billy, who ran away from the orphanage to fend, largely unsuccessfully, for himself. Peter's first order of business is to find some place for them to live, he stumbling upon the rooming house owned and operated by Mrs. Badger, outwardly stern but with a heart of gold. His next task is to find a job to earn some money, in part to pay Mrs. Badger. In a one time only freelance job, he meets an equally penniless young woman named Miss King, who encourages him to contact wealthy Ben Hatch, whose company not only distributes petroleum but operates the country's most profitable and widespread petrol stations. Peter devises a plan which he thinks will reap Hatch even more money, but in being turned away by Hatch, Peter pitches it to Hatch's struggling competition, Blue Point, who hires Peter to enact what ends up being his very successful plan, thus largely eating into Hatch's business. Peter also hires Miss King as his secretary in being attracted to her. What Miss King has been hiding from Peter in what started out being a gag is that she is really socialite Cynthia Hatch, Ben Hatch's daughter, she also not telling her father her association with the competition eating into his business.
