Knowing precisely what he doesn't want to do, high school senior and aspiring professional kick-boxer Lloyd Dobler prepares for graduation. And determined to get beautiful Diane Court, the class valedictorian, into his life, Lloyd summons up the courage to call her, asking her out on a date.
