A Horseshoe for Luck

A man walking home from work finds a horseshoe on the ground. He shows it to the local birds, claiming it will bring him good luck. He is so distracted by thoughts of what it might bring that he walks into the pole of a streetlamp. The lamp is dislodged and hits him on the head. At home, he gets a ladder and puts a nail above his door from which to hang the horseshoe. In climbing down, he loses his balance and grabs at the door frame to catch himself. It dislodges the horseshoe from its nail. He falls and the horseshoe hits his head again. He nails the horseshoe to the threshold. When the door will not close, he tugs at the shoe until it suddenly releases. He flies across the room and crashes into his bookcase, which breaks. As he sits there in a daze, he notices a flyer that says good citizens should turn in old items to be made into new goods. He dutifully takes his horseshoe and deposits it in the metal recycle stream. He has helped industry collect useful waste.
