Plot Storyline

In 1903, French physician, poet, and artist Victor Segalen traveled to Tahiti to meet Paul Gauguin, but the painter had already passed away by the time he arrived.

Tahiti, 1903. Doctor, poet, and artist Victor Segalen leaves France to meet Paul Gauguin in person on Hiva Oa. But upon his arrival on the island, he learns that the painter has already passed away. Inspired by Segalen's own notes, "Paradise and Wilderness" is a reflection on Gauguin's legacy, his contradictions, and the tense power relations between colonial rulers and the colonized.
