Brett, a struggling writer, and his fiance, Jean, share a small apartment in Chicago. The couple has grown emotionally distant and their stress is compounded by both the freezing winter storm outside and their attempt to quit smoking together. One night, the couple steps on the icy porch to smoke a cigarette. Brett suddenly finds himself alone in the apartment and Jean has mysteriously vanished. The temperature continues to plummet and Brett begins a desperate search for Jean as time slips dangerously away from both of them.
