Hugo

Hugo, 9, playing by himself along the wasted urban waterways of inner Melbourne appears carefree and content. But inside he is plagued by his mother's absence. As he moves towards the transitional time of later childhood he begins to want to know more about her. This brings him into conflict with his father, who he more or less blames for his mother's departure. Frustrated, Hugo flees during their evening meal, leading his father to come find him and reveal the smallest remaining fragment of his mother's life. It is this that will help Hugo accept that their sometimes fraught but loving relationship is more than he has ever, and will ever, have with his mother, despite his evident need to feel closer to her.
