Plot:
Rancher Lee Hackett was a driving force that helped create the territory. He is still seen as one of the most powerful and respected ranchers in the territory. He will do anything to protect family consisting of two young adult sons, more so to protect the Hackett name than anything. Those two sons are vastly different from each other, something not lost on either of them or Lee. Lee's favored son, the oldest Ed, has to show his superiority in any encounter, which usually means coming out on top by violent means. Temperamental in shooting first and asking questions later if at all, he respects no one but himself, but least of all the Indian in being racist. Conversely, Lee just doesn't understand his youngest son Davy, who believes times have changed since the days when Lee was their age, Davy refusing to carry a gun most of the time (although he does know how to shoot one) in not espousing dealing with matters using violence, and befriending Indians in they just being fellow citizens. Jackson City, where they will end an upcoming horse drive, in fact does not allow open carry of guns. On that drive, Ed purposefully runs one of their hired hands off the side of a cliff to his death, he, Paul Chouard, biracial in being half Indian. While there were only two eyewitnesses - two fellow Indians - who know that it was murder, Lee, in protecting Ed, makes a deal with horse trader Jensen Sieverts, who was not even on the drive, to provide false testimony as an "eyewitness" as to it solely being an accident. This move does not sit well with Davy not only in understanding the ruthless nature of his brother, but in having a burgeoning relationship with Paul's sister, Clee Chouard, who does not much respect the Hacketts in what Lee and Ed represent. As Ed continues to push the boundary of what most of society considers acceptable, including breaking the law in carrying out violent acts, the question becomes whether there is a breaking point for Lee in defending and protecting Ed.
