Fan-Fan the Tulip

The beautiful fortune teller Adeline predicts a glorious future for young Fanfan if he joins the king's army. He will experience great adventures, fight for an important battalion and finally marry the king's daughter. Fanfan, who is already promised to a farmer's daughter, is just in time for this. To escape the arranged marriage, he joins the army. As he is about to sign the declaration of commitment, he realizes that Adeline is the daughter of officer La Franchise, who is urgently looking for recruits for his battalion. Although Fanfan has been deceived, he believes in the prophecy and sets his mind on marrying Henriette, the daughter of King Louis XV. On the way to the barracks, Fanfan witnesses Henriette and the king's mistress, Madame de Pompadour, being abducted. Fanfan, who is gifted with his sword, puts the kidnappers to flight and saves the lives of the princess and the courtesan. His brief encounter with Henriette has set his heart on fire. Without further ado, Fanfan enters the royal chambers to confess his love for the princess. But the bodyguard catches him and Fanfan is sentenced to death.
