Regency England. Not yet twenty-one, Emma Woodhouse gleefully takes credit for the union of her governess Miss Taylor and widowed Mr. Weston, who many believed would never marry again. As such, she, a person who likes to know what's going on in everyone's lives and manipulate things to her sensibilities, believes she was a born matchmaker, what she sees as her mission in life. Being a young woman of means, she doesn't feel the need to get married herself, especially in she the last single sibling left to take care of her very needy father. Among the few who don't believe Emma has any business matchmaking or had anything to do with the Westons' union is her "friend" Mr. Knightley, the two who see themselves more as brother and sister in their respective siblings being married to each other, but more importantly verbal sparring partners in they agreeing on almost nothing. Emma's next matchmaking sights are set on her friend Harriet Smith, a "natural" of unknown but who Emma is certain of noble parentage. She is an indecisive woman who thus trusts and relies on Emma's opinion on matters of the heart, despite she already having a potential suitor of sorts in the form of Robert Martin, one of Mr. Knightley's tenant farmers. Who Emma believes would be her perfect match is not Mr. Martin who she believes is beneath Miss Smith, but Mr. Elton, the local clergy. What happens in Emma's life is affected by the long anticipated arrival of two people. The first is Jane Fairfax, the niece of Miss Bates, an incessantly chatty woman whose family lost their former fortune. Emma has always regarded Miss Fairfax negatively as a rival in accomplishing things in life. The second is Mr. Weston's handsome and charming son, Frank Churchill (who took the surname of his uncle by marriage upon becoming his heir), who has been long regarded as a catch for any woman, he who does show interest in Emma as is her want. But as one thing after another goes awry in Emma's manipulations, she has to wonder if her thoughts about her own potential romance are equally as misguided.
