Plot:
Adolescent Elliott lives with his teenage brother Michael, preschool age sister Gertie, and their mother Mary in a newly developed residential suburb in Southern California, they all adjusting to Mary's recent separation from their father who has a new girlfriend. This situation often leaves the kids now to their own devices. One evening, Elliott thinks he spots a creature in their shed which he describes as being goblin-like, the other family members either believing it to be the return of a wayward coyote which has been on their property before, and/or Elliott's overactive imagination in light of their new family situation. Determined to prove them wrong, Elliott does discover the creature, unlike anything he's ever seen. After getting over his initial fear, he ends up confiding in both Michael and Gertie, they collectively not only befriending who Elliott has coined E.T. (short for extra-terrestrial) in believing correctly that the intelligent creature with telekinetic abilities is not Earthly, but hiding E.T. from the rest of the world, including their mother, to protect him. What Elliott believes he is able to glean is that E.T. is trying to find his way home. What Elliott does not know is that E.T. was inadvertently left behind as those in his craft left in haste to "escape". What Elliott also does not know is that he has reason to worry as some authorities are aware of there having been an alien craft in their midst and perhaps that one alien was left behind, they who may not have E.T.'s best interest at heart.
