Plot:
On March 5th 1960, US Air Force Major Bill Allison, the lead test pilot out of Sands Air Force Base, is on a high altitude flight in the next test in the space program. However, he lands in a world he doesn't understand, a totally desolate Sands devoid of any life. He eventually discovers that he, in having broken the time barrier, has landed in a dystopian future, 2024, everyone living in a subterranean world called the Citadel due to a cosmic plague the result of the plethora of nuclear fallout shortly after his 1960 reality. With the exception of the two leaders of the Citadel, The Supreme and the second in charge, The Captain, everyone else, due to that plague, is now deaf, mute and sterile. The one presumed exception to the sterility is The Supreme's granddaughter, Princess Trirene, who above this abnormality compared to the rest of the population, has the ability to read minds. Allison further learns that there are three others in the Citadel who are like him that have made their way to the future, although those three are from a post-plague time with their respective crafts long destroyed. While The Supreme and The Captain don't trust him and have a need to control him, Allison has a need to try and make his way back to 1960, not only to "go home", but to try and prevent the plague from happening. Beyond those that are trying to stop him, some who have their own ulterior motives, affecting what Allison does is he having fallen in love with Trirene. The series of subsequent "ifs" are if he can make make his way back to 1960 and if so if he would be able to convince those in authority what he experienced to prevent the plague from happening.
