Plot:
Roger Baxter (Scott Jacoby), a young American boy with a speech impediment, goes to live in London with his mother (Lynn Carlin), a self-absorbed artistic socialite, after his parents' divorce in Los Angeles. He struggles to pronounce the letter R, and at school he becomes close to his speech therapist (Patricia Neal). He makes friends with his upstairs neighbor couple, Chris Bentley (Britt Ekland) whom he meets in the lift, and her French boyfriend, Roger Tunnell (Jean-Pierre Cassel). As he spends time with them, he discovers they are a couple in love who enjoy his company and make him feel normal. He also meets Nemo (Sally Thomsett), a teen-aged girl who lives across the street from his flat. He discovers he saw her first as she used a spy-scope through her window. He decided to pose for her naked on his balcony. They laugh about it during a visit. But he discovers she is leaving the country for several years just as they become acquainted. His own parents are extremely self-centered and neglectful, and he feels isolated in a strange city. He eventually slides into an emotional breakdown. One day, he wanders around alone for hours until he is discovered by strangers who bring him to the hospital. When he pronounces Roberta Klemm's name perfectly she comes to visit him. She then brings his mother. But Roger refuses to speak to her. When the doctor tells her it's a psychiatric problem, she is upset. But she allows him to stay in the hospital until he is discharged home. But unfortunately when he returns with Roberta, the elevator operator shares with him news of his friend Chris' death from pneumonia. He becomes catatonic. His mother then becomes hysterical and slaps him. Roberta returns the slap and brings Roger back to the hospital. His father visits from America but Roger still doesn't react. Roberta finally is able to draw him out. When his French namesake visits, young Roger is finally able to share his grief with Chris' grief-stricken boyfriend as Roger translates young Roger's signals into French, then English and then they share a hug.
