Buenos Aires, 2001: The economic crisis has Argentina firmly in its grip and the future seems bleak for Julio Farber, a shoe shop owner and passionate musician. His business is barely making any turnover and his debts are growing inexorably. With a heavy heart, he plans to emigrate to Germany, his mother's homeland, to earn money there as a musician. With the prospect of a new life in a foreign country, he begins to wind up his life in Argentina. But fate intervenes: In a car accident, he meets Mariela, a feisty cab driver who is struggling with life's adversities just as much as he is. What begins as a fleeting encounter soon develops into an intimate relationship. Mariela brings fresh impetus into Julio's life and helps him to realize that Buenos Aires is full of possibilities despite all the problems. Julio's tango band, which he had almost given up, also experiences a revival: together with his friends, Julio persuades the former star singer Ricardo Tortorella to make a comeback and they manage to get gigs again. As his relationship with Mariela deepens and he is carried by the energy of the music, Julio is faced with a difficult decision: should he stay and fight for a better life in Buenos Aires - or pursue his dreams abroad?
