Wicked

In the Land of Oz, the Wicked Witch has just been killed by a young woman who did so by throwing a bucket of water on her. Glinda, the Good Witch, is informing the people of Oz of this news. In the process, Glinda is asked if she believes in nature or nurture in people turning out good or evil in questioning why the Wicked Witch turned out the way she did and why Glinda turned out the way she did, and if the stories are true that she knew and was friends with the Wicked Witch. Glinda begins to tell a story of how she, then named Galinda, and the Wicked Witch, then named Elphaba Thropp, met as students at Shiz University, where Galinda wanted to master the art of sorcery under esteemed professor Madame Morrible, with all having the ultimate goal of a personal invitation to meet the powerful Wizard of Oz. She also tells of it being the time where once revered animals were being increasingly persecuted in Dr. Dillamond, the Professor of History, being the last animal teaching at Shiz, he a goat. While Galinda had always attracted friends around her in being pretty and "genial", including embarking on a relationship with handsome fellow student Fiyero Tigelaar, a prince, Elphaba, for the first time, had had opportunities in her inherent ability for sorcery which only needed to be harnessed and controlled. That first time was in previously always being shunned, despite being the daughter of Governor Thropp, in one obvious "flaw": that she has green skin, something with which she was born.
