Plot:
In Brazil's drought-stricken sertao (backlands), a destitute family-Fabiano, his wife Sinha Vitoria, their two young sons, and their dog Baleia-as they wander in search of food, water, and work. After escaping a severe drought, they find temporary refuge on a cattle ranch, where Fabiano works as a hired hand. Despite brief moments of stability, the family is subjected to exploitation, police brutality, hunger, and constant insecurity.
