Hans is 80. He has experienced a lot, traveled the world, and started a family. A few years ago, his beloved wife Martha died. Now, due to his age, he has to put his dog to sleep. He is sad and lonely. His health is also deteriorating. Everyday life is becoming difficult to manage. After an accident one morning prevents him from getting out of bed, his doctor admits him to a nursing home for his own safety. This is a nightmare for him, even though life there could actually be quite pleasant. Nurse Mary takes great care of him, and the neat Emilie tries to integrate him into life at the home. But Hans unkindly rejects everything. He is plagued by a great fear of a long death. So he asks his old musician friend Willi to get him a lethal drug. But Willi finds this request emotionally overwhelming. He asks Beat, Hans' son, to take care of his father. But Beat has broken off contact with him. After recovering well from a stroke, Hans realizes that he must face the unresolved issues in his life.
