After Emma (Kate Micucci) is dumped by Luke (Josh Brener) and cheated out of her latest app idea, the programmer adopts the cat Ajax and the dog Summit and moves with them to San Francisco. By luck, Emma manages to find an apartment through the shy building superintendent Carl (Sean Astin), but her love life remains plagued by bad luck at first. But when Ajax and Summit run away one special full moon night due to Carl's carelessness, Emma soon finds herself face to face with two suitors who know her inside and out: her pets, now in human form. While the graceful Diego (Justin Chatwin) relies entirely on his charm and mysterious aura to win Emma's heart, the loyal Sam (Steve Howey) takes a job as a temp at her workplace. However, in the competition for Emma's affections, the former four-legged friends face not only their own animal quirks but also Carl, who transforms from a good friend into the man of her dreams.
