Howard Tyler moved with his family, his wife Judy Tyler and their adolescent son Tommy Tyler, west to the proverbial land of opportunity for a better life. But Howard is unable to find any work, their lack of a steady income especially hard now that Judy is expecting their second child. He believes his luck has changed when he meets Jerry Slocum, who offers him work. Initially reluctant in learning that the work is in being the getaway driver in Jerry's hold-ups, Howard, feeling desperate, agrees to be Jerry's partner. Seeing what appears to be the easy money after their first job together, Howard, who lies to Judy about the source of their newfound money, will eventually discover Jerry's violent nature, he who is not averse to violence for his end goal of the money and not getting caught. Howard learning such may be after it's too late to get himself out of this jam. What happens in this situation is affected by the writings of newspaper criminal reporter Gil Stanton, who has a specific point of view regarding the crimes on which he reports.
