In a small town, Henry Morrison slaughters his family inside their house; changes his appearance shaving, cutting his hair and using contact lens; and leaves the house. One year later, he is happily married with the widow Susan Maine-Blake in another town, using the identity of the real estate agent of the American Eagle Gerald "Jerry" Blake. However, his teenage stepdaughter Stephanie Maine hates him and is under psychological treatment with Dr. Bondurant. Meanwhile, James "Jim" Ogilvie, the brother of Henry's previous wife Vicki, convinces a journalist friend of him to publish the photo and an article about Henry Morrison murder since the police have filed Morrison's case. However the editor of the newspaper removes the picture. Jim decides to investigate the slaying spot and finds a magazine with missing pages in the basement in his workshop. He goes to the library and finds an article about ten American towns good to live. He decides to search Henry in the nearby listed towns. Stephanie suspects Jerry's creepy behavior in a party and in the basement of the house after seeing a newspaper article and believes he is the killer. Meanwhile, Dr. Bondurant does not succeed to talk to Jerry by phone and decides to pose as a possible client wanting to buy a house to meet him. What will happen to Jerry?
