In a post-Second Civil War America, the government hosts The Long Walk: an annual televised endurance contest designed to aid the recovery effort and boost the nation's morale. For the good of society, 50 of the country's finest young men take on the ultimate challenge, where they must maintain a continuous walking speed of three miles per hour and last the longest in a gruelling competition with no finish line and only one winner. Any participant can do it, and any of them can win the grand prize if they refuse to give up and push their limits. However, those who lack the proud American spirit face the brutal leadership of the Major and the wrong side of his gun. Friendships are unnecessary, but welcome. Still, it all boils down to this: You walk, you live; you stop, you die.
