Psychologist Chris Kelvin flies to a space station circling near the planet Solaris. At the station are scientists who have long been out of touch. Kelvin needs to know what exactly happened at the station, and whether it is possible to continue the scientific study of the planet. Arriving at the station, he learns that most of the crew, and among them his old friend Gibaryan, committed suicide or disappeared, and the two remaining scientists are clearly not in their minds. At night, Kelvin realizes that strange things are really happening at the station: his dead wife appears in his cabin. Kelvin does not believe what is happening and tricks her into a shuttle and sends her into space.
