After the death of his wife, profiler Will Ruiney (Karl Urban) took some time off before returning to work. Now he is assigned journalist Christi Davies (Brittany Snow) to accompany him on his investigations so she can write a report on police work. Ruiney reluctantly agrees to the interviews, but soon he has other problems to deal with. When he is called to the scene of a murder, it quickly becomes clear that a serial killer is at work. A letter has been carved into the torso of the hanged victim. It seems as if the perpetrator wants to play gallows man with the police. He has also carved the numbers of Ruiney's badge and that of his ex-partner into a table. Ray Archer (Al Pacino) is already retired, but now gets involved in the investigation. There is obviously a direct connection between the two police officers and the killer. And now he has his sights set on Christi Davies. A merciless race against time has begun, because the plan of this perverse game calls for a new victim every 24 hours.
