Plot
Storyline
A year in the life of an upper-middle-class family's maid in Mexico City in the early 1970s.
It's the early 1970s in the Roma neighborhood of Mexico City. Indigenous Cleodegaria Gutierrez, along with her friend, the cook, Adela, is one of two live-in domestics in the household of an upper middle class family: married couple Antonio and Sofia, a doctor and biochemist, respectively, their four preteen to adolescent offspring, Sofia's mother Teresa, their rambunctious dog Borras, who largely does his business in the enclosed driveway in not being let out of the house, and a menagerie of other smaller pets, such as birds. One year in the life of this collective is presented focusing largely on Cleo and Sofia, and their relationship in light of their respective romantic relationship problems. Antonio's extended absence, which is explained to the children as he being at a research conference in Quebec, is he really still being in town but having left Sofia in having a new girlfriend, difficult on Sofia in still loving him. And Cleo has started what is her first sexual relationship, with Fermin, the cousin of Ramon, Adela's boyfriend. Fermin's fixation on his martial arts training largely in service to a paramilitary objective places Cleo far down his priorities of which she is unaware, which is in contrast to her true feelings for him.
