London, in the year 2000: the elderly pensioner Joan Stanley (Judi Dench) is visited by a police squad who take her away from her terraced house as a serious criminal. The accusations against the former scientist, who worked for decades as a respectable librarian, include a total of 27 violations of the law - including treason. Joan is alleged to have passed on important information to the Soviet Union in the 1940s while working for the British nuclear weapons program. While Joan's son Nick (Ben Miles), a respected lawyer, believes the whole thing to be a macabre miscarriage of justice, his elderly mother knows that the moment of truth is inevitably approaching. In the interrogations with Detectives Hart (Nina Sosanya) and Adams (Laurence Spellman), Joan must confront her life story as a young woman (Sophie Cookson): her love for the communist student leader and later KGB informant Leo (Tom Hughes) and her work in the British nuclear weapons program under the direction of her future husband Max (Stephen Campbell Moore). Soon it's no longer about what she did back then, but about why. Now Joan must find the strength to explain the courageous decision she made back then and which she still stands behind.
