Red (1994) DVD Criterion

This third in Krzysztof Kieslowski's trilogy of stories on fate centers of Valentine Dussaut, a University of Geneva student and model. She leads a busy life but is emotionally unfulfilled and lonely as her boyfriend Michel, who she loves but who is passive/aggressive in his own need for her, lives in England. In one of those items of chance, she meets retired judge Joseph Kern, who she initially finds cold and cold-hearted. That view changes to disgust when she learns directly that he has been illegally eavesdropping on his neighbors' telephone conversations, something he tells her he has been doing all his life, he even somewhat daring her to tell specifically the neighbor whose conversation she overheard of what the judge has been doing. She finds that the issue is not as black and white as she assumed as she begins to form a bond with the judge, who she ends up believing is a conduit to what will happen in her future.
