It's the 1940s Mexico. Private nurse Coral Fabre, the single mother to two adolescent children, idolizes Charles Boyer. A lonely woman, she answers the lonely-hearts ad posted by Spaniard Nicolas Estrella, the item catching her eye being he describing himself as Boyeresque. Despite she highlighting to him those many aspects of her being unattractive to men, such as being overweight, the two ending up having sex. She becomes obsessed with him even after catching him in the act of robbing her, learning that she is the only the latest of his victims who he romances then robs after meeting them through these ads, and subsequently learning that his Boyeresque appearance is through proverbial smoke and mirrors in his Spanish accent being fake in being a native Mexican and he wearing a toupee to cover a bald spot caused by stress related chronic migraines. Despite he believing her obsession a sign of her instability, she is ultimately able to convince him that they are the perfect pair, she even giving up her children for him. She proposes that they enter into the outline of his schemes together, she, pretending to be his sister, to travel with him and choose the women most likely to reap them the biggest rewards. They also agree in that in their "love" for each other that he will no longer have sex with any of their marks. She ends up taking their scheme one step further in killing their marks in her jealousy for any romantic interest, real or made up, he shows toward them.
