The narrator, a handsome script writer, is insecure in relationships since his parents died, mother having left to Argentina for a lover, so he was raised by his granddad. His other friends are fellows scenarists, all with relational impairments: Lyle, Bryan, Samson, Mallory and best buddy Scott, whom he met trying to return the 'life-changing' novel Love in times of cholera. When he meets an irresistibly fascinating woman at a charity event, he's too baffled to ask for her coordinates, Scott helps him to start a near-hopeless search, which after much effort and embarrassment finds her and starts a steamy affair, only to learn she's still committed to her 'reliable' British fiance 'Stuffy.
