Plot:
Emilie, a young French woman with Chinese roots, lives alone in her grandmother's apartment in Paris. To earn some extra money alongside her low-paid job in customer service at a telephone company, she is looking for a roommate. Camille responds to her ad, who, with his gender-neutral name Emilie, does not initially appear to be a man. Their first encounter ends in Emilie's bed, whereupon Camille moves in with her. The high school teacher, who is incapable of commitment, spends his free time pursuing literary pursuits and casual love affairs. His relationship with Emilie soon suffers when she begins to develop feelings for him. At the same time, Nora moves in. Fleeing a relationship with a mysterious man, she begins studying law at the Sorbonne at the age of 33 to start a new chapter in her life. Due to her resemblance to a porn actress named Amber, she quickly becomes the victim of harassment. Nora drops out of college. In her desperation, she contacts her doppelganger via the internet and begins paying for private meetings. The paths of Emilie, Camille, and Nora cross in their eternal flight. Using masterful black-and-white cinematography, Jacques Audiard explores contemporary behaviors that serve to fill an inner void.
