Of Chicago-based Luxington Events, Lottie Morgan is en route to Boston to make a pitch for what is considered one of the most lucrative contracts, to organize the Christmas Eve event for the Warby Foundation to raise money for the children's hospital. The centerpiece of the event is the auction of a "priceless" antique nutcracker that has just come into the Warbys' possession. If they get the contract (Lottie admitting the pitch not her strength) and the event meets or exceeds the expectation of Erica Warby, the foundation head, Lottie's boss Hilary will assign Lottie as the head of their yet to be opened Boston office, Boston where Lottie grew up and where her widowed father Jerry, the owner/operator of a 24-hour diner, still lives. Beyond wanting to do well on the contract, Lottie has mixed emotions about the possibility of moving back to Boston if only because her deceased mother was always the connection between her and her father, who always seems to be working at the diner. With the advice of a stranger on her flight, he with who she had a mix-up in having the same suitcase, Lottie is able to secure the contract. She eventually learns his sage advice is because he is Tristan Warby, Erica's son. Despite being somewhat the black sheep of the family, Tristan is heir apparent to lead the foundation once Erica decides to retire. But problems arise when Lottie and Tristan discover that there was at least one more suitcase on that flight like theirs as the suitcase Tristan brought home was not his, inside his which was that priceless nutcracker. Rather than come clean to his mother, Tristan, with no help from the airline, convinces Lottie to help him track down his suitcase and thus the nutcracker only using the information inside the suitcase he brought home as leads. Those leads include a photo of the suitcase's owner, "Dave", and his preteen daughter, what is probably his Christmas gift to her, the long sold out doll of the season, and a day-timer with events Dave and his daughter were planning on doing together. The search process highlights their differences, Lottie who is meticulous as the natural way she operates, while Tristan believes in Christmas magic and fate, as that magic was how he came into possession of the nutcracker in the first place. As such, he believes they were meant to meet by their suitcase mix-up and that they are meant to find Dave and the nutcracker before the fundraiser in five days. But it may all be for not if Erica discovers the lie by omission which would not only mean Lottie potentially being fired but losing her job with Luxington altogether.
