Plot:
Kathy, Tommy and Ruth grew up together in the late 1970s attending Hailsham, a boarding school in the English countryside, insulated in that they and their classmates knew not to wander beyond the perimeter of the school grounds for the dangers they were all told that lay outside the fence. At school, there was an especially strong emotional bond between Kathy and Tommy, she his protector in he being teased by their classmates for his lack of athletic or creative ability, the latter as none of his artwork was ever accepted into the Gallery curated by one of their guardians, Madame. However, Tommy and Ruth are the ones that embark on at least a sexual relationship as they reach their young adult years despite Kathy indeed loving Tommy. While there was some indication while they were at school, the three among others do indeed learn that they were at Hailsham for a specific reason, their lives predetermined for greater societal good at the expense of their lives being prematurely cut short. This knowledge brings into light issues in their interrelationships, most specifically the emotions of jealousy and love and whether the latter can be a means at least to defer what to them has been their known imminent demise.
