In Staten Island, the shy Venus "Vee" is a high school student that lives a financially difficult life with her mother Nancy, who still grieves the loss of her son two years ago. Vee's best friends are Tommy and the popular Sydney "Sid", who is participating of the online game "Nerve". The participants are divided in "watchers" or "players" and challenged to bold tasks that must be filmed by the player's cellphone. When the player succeeds in the task, he or she receives an amount that increases throughout the game. When Vee is at a diner with her schoolmates, Sid humiliates her and Vee decides to participate the Nerve as player. Her first task is going to a cafeteria and kiss an stranger. She selects the teenager Ian, who is reading her favorite book, "The Lighthouse". They befriend each other and she learns that he is also a player in Nerve. They decide to proceed together accomplishing the tasks. Until Vee freaks out and does something she was not supposed to do.
