Plot:
1402: Five years earlier, through skillful and extremely power-conscious maneuvering, the legendary ruler Margarethe I had united Denmark, Norway, and Sweden into an alliance controlled by her family, the Danish royal house. As the sole uncrowned regent, she directs the fortunes of the Kalmar Union in northern Europe through her young adopted son Erik, the actual king. But the powerful alliance has many enemies: Margarethe's scheming opponents suddenly claim that her son Olaf, believed to be dead, is still alive. Rumors are circulating that she had him murdered in order to remain in power herself. When, of all times, a man who actually claims to be Olaf shows up at Erik's engagement to the daughter of the King of England, Margarethe must not only fight for her plans and the survival of her great empire, but also reconcile her conflicting feelings. For a foreign conspiracy, originating from the Teutonic Order, is underway to sow discord among the Nordic states and could cost Margarethe everything she believes in - especially the unity of her empire. No sooner does she think she recognizes her son, whom she believed to be dead, in the stranger than she has to make an inhuman decision for reasons of state.
