Jacques, around 40, has given up on his big goals in life, having failed to achieve them. Instead, he plans his vacations with military precision, making the rest of his family's summer hell. He also gets it into his head to buy a sailboat. His wife Albertine is not convinced at first. Boats are very expensive, and she would rather spruce up the front yard of their vacation home. But the decision is made, and a boat is purchased. The sleazy salesman Chevreteau sells it to them, even though it has long since seen better days. So the family embarks on a little adventure across the sea.
