France, 1815. With his spirit crushed by back-breaking convict labour, Jean Valjean, former Prisoner 24601, becomes a free man after a long 19-year sentence for stealing a loaf of bread. But the human soul is indomitable. And having renounced past transgressions, Jean redefines himself and swears to lead an honourable life as a respected local entrepreneur and pillar of society.
