Plot:
Vals-des-Vals in the Laurentides of Quebec. The story of one family is told largely from the perspective of its youngest member, precocious early teen Manon. She lives with her single mother, early-thirtysomething Michelle, and her Uncle Guy. Michelle, who operates a firewood business often with both their help, supports Guy in he being intellectually slow the result of a childhood bout of meningitis. Manon openly dislikes her uncle, especially when he's drunk which is most of the time. Manon also openly dislikes Michelle's current boyfriend, middle age Maurice, solely because he is a police officer. Manon much prefers Michelle's former boyfriend Gaetan, in her mind he being fun in sharing his beer and joints with her. While she is a voracious reader, Manon often skips school in seeing it beneath her. While still unhappy with the result, Manon is constantly manipulating the situation of their collective lives to achieve a specific goal, which is Michelle's unconditional and undying love at the expense of anyone else, which Manon doesn't believe she has. Conversely, Michelle is aware of Manon's manipulation in always referring to her as "boss", albeit arguably unaware of the holistic reason for it.
