Here Comes Mr Jordon (1941)

Playing the saxophone, nonetheless badly, to center himself, Joe Pendleton is a prize fighter whose next fight again Ralph "K.O." Murdock is to determine the number one contender as the heavyweight champion. His destiny changes when against the advice of Max Corkle, his manager, Joe, a pilot, flies himself to that fight, he crashing the plane and dying. Vehemently denying that he is actually dead en route to heaven, Joe learns that he indeed was not yet scheduled to die, the error made by Messenger 7013, in not wanting to see Joe suffer, taking his soul out of his body prematurely. Mr. Jordan, the gatekeeper to heaven, orders 7013 to return Joe's soul to his body before it's discovered. However, it's too late as the body has not only been discovered, but Max had him cremated, meaning that Joe's soul has no body to which to return. As such, Mr. Jordan feels that he has no other option but to take over the case himself, namely to find another body for Joe's soul. He tries to convince Joe that the body is only a vessel for his soul which will always come through. which is partly why he somewhat reluctantly agrees to inhabit the body temporarily of wealthy industrialist Bruce Farnsworth until a more suitable permanent body can be located. While Farnsworth is ruthless and unscrupulous, just secretly murdered by his equally unscrupulous wife, Julia Farnsworth, and his personal secretary, Tony Abbott, Joe agreeing was purely to help a young woman named Bette Logan, whose father was sent to prison by Farnsworth to hide his own wrongdoing. Joe will do anything for Bette in falling immediately in love with her, despite she only having contempt for Farnsworth. In the process, Joe decides to try and get Farnsworth's body into shape to enter the boxing ring, he only able to do so with the help of who, under the circumstances, is an extremely confused Max. As Joe changes his mind about giving up Farnsworth's body as he is not only able to help Bette and her father, much to the chagrin of Farnsworth's Board of Directors, but wants to marry her, Mr. Jordan has to remind him of what he agreed to against his changed wishes, with Mr. Jordan trying to ensure him that he will achieve his true destiny in everything needing to happen as it was "meant to be".
