The parallel stories of three connected thirty-something angst-filled New Yorkers are presented. Sam Wexler, a short story writer, has just completed and is peddling his first novel to his publisher, the meeting which does not go well on several levels. Simultaneously, he enters into two distinctly different relationships which pulls him in different directions, both relationships mostly of his own choosing. One is with Rasheed, an adolescent he ends up "adopting" by chance, Rasheed's true background unclear in he only stating that he doesn't want "to go back" in the implication that he is in foster care. The other is with Mississippi, an aspiring singer working as a bar server, she to who he is immediately attracted but who he may have a struggle maintaining a relationship with, their time together much like the comfort he has in writing short stories as compared to the long haul of a novel. Annie, Sam's best friend, suffers from alopecia, which is only one of the reasons for her insecurities about herself. As such, she tends to choose the wrong men, such as ex-boyfriend Ira. A series of items makes her look at her persistent work colleague, a lawyer also named Sam - hence her referral to him as Sam #2 - in a different way, he who she previously dissuaded in any way she could in he not being normally her type. And Mary Catherine, Sam's "cousin" (i.e. they grew up with their respective parents as best friends), is a committed New Yorker, the city part of how she defines herself despite not taking advantage of all that the city has to offer. When her live-in boyfriend Charlie announces that he wants them to move to Los Angeles for a business opportunity, she has to look at her and their life critically, especially as another issue arises that will factor into any decision she and they make.
