After the death of the King of Denmark, Hamlet's father, his brother Claudius ascends to the throne and marries his widow Gertrude. The haste of this wedding, Claudius's dissolute life, and the demand to "mourn him a little more moderately henceforth, not forgetting myself" cause deep sadness and disgust in Prince Hamlet. His heavy thoughts are interrupted by the appearance of his friend Horatio, accompanied by two officers, who tells of how they saw the ghost of Hamlet's father at night. Hamlet, making them promise to keep silent about what they saw, decides to see his father's ghost at any cost.
