Plot:
Bart Tare, now decommissioned and unemployed after the war, has been obsessed with guns since he was a child. He has no intention of ever shooting to kill anyone or anything, largely due to the traumatic experience of shooting and killing a baby chick with a BB gun when he was a child. Despite having a generally good heart, this obsession has gotten Bart into trouble in the past, those troubles leading to most of his growing up period being spent in reform school. It is this obsession that is largely the reason he falls in love with Annie Laurie Starr, a sharpshooter in a carnival sideshow act. The two end up getting married. Unwilling to live the life on an average Joe's salary, Laurie convinces Bart to make their money through armed hold-ups, he agreeing only on the caveat that no one gets shot, let alone killed, in the process. So they embark on a crime spree across the country. When they first encounter problems, Bart realizes that he didn't think through the consequences, they who can never rely on anyone else and that they will always be on the run. He will also discover just how far Laurie will go to protect the life she wants to build for them.
