Plot:
In Atlanta, the construction engineer John Garrity is separated from his wife Allison Garrity, but they keep an amicable relationship because of their diabetic son Nathan. On the day of his seventh birthday, John arrives earlier at Nathan's birthday party, and Allison asks him to buy more wine and beer for the guests. On the same day, the comet Clarke will pass near Earth and people are expecting to see it. While in the supermarket with Nathan, John receives an unexpected presidential warning telling him that his family and he were selected to move to a shelter, and they must move to a designed military base. When he arrives home, the guests have already arrived, and John receives the warning for the second time. Nobody else received the message and out of the blue, there is a nearby explosion caused by the collision of a small piece of Clarke. John drives with Allison and Nathan to the designed base, they receive bangles. When they are ready to embark in a military plane, they note that Nathan's package of insulin is not in the bag and realize that the boy dropped it on the car. John asks them to embark while he goes to his car to retrieve the medicine. However, Allison talks to a military soldier instead and Nathan is rejected to embark since he is diabetic. When John returns, he fails to meet his family and returns to his car, where he finds a note from Allison saying that she is going to the house of her father Dale with Nathan. Both embark on dangerous journeys to reach Dale's house in Lexington, New York, since they need to hitchhike in a country without law and order.
