As their classmates joyfully depart for the winter holidays, Kat and Rose find themselves stranded at the prestigious Bramford Academy, a Catholic boarding school in New York, waiting in vain for their parents. Now left alone with only two caretakers, the girls soon discover that the blood-chilling rumours of sinister forces haunting the institution may not be completely unfounded. And while Rose sneaks off for forbidden trysts with her boyfriend, Kat is plagued by vivid nightmares, haunting visions, and unsettling phone calls. Meanwhile, a mysterious young woman named Joan hitch-hikes to Bramford, aided by an unsuspecting couple. But as the strange traveller's behaviour becomes increasingly perplexing, an unseen evil force draws everyone closer to the harrowing climax and the void that remains.
