Twenty-six year old Caleb Smith works as a programmer/coder at Bluebook, the world's most popular search engine. In a company-wide lottery, Caleb is chosen to work on a week long project at the isolated home/research facility of company owner, Nathan Bateman. Upon his arrival at the estate - which is hidden deep in the mountains with the only other person there being the non-Anglo understanding housekeeper Kyoko - and meeting "buddy buddy" Nathan for the first time, Caleb, who is required to sign an NDA, learns that his task is to conduct a Turing test on the beautiful "Ava", a gynoid Nathan has created with artificial intelligence. Caleb's interactions with Ava are to be conducted in a room with an unbreakable glass partition between them. Nathan has left enough of Ava's internal workings visible to remind Caleb that he is dealing with a machine and not a human being if there ever was a point he may forget. As the week progresses, the situation becomes a battle of wills between Nathan, Caleb and Ava, each who may have a secret agenda. What happens between them is affected by the facility being plagued by occasional but only temporary power failures which render items such as the security cameras inoperable for the duration of each failure.
