Plot Storyline
While matchmaking for friends and neighbours, a young 19th Century Englishwoman nearly misses her own chance at love.
Regency England. Emma Woodhouse gleefully takes credit for the union of her governess Anne Taylor and Mr. Weston. As such, she, a person who likes to know what's going on in everyone's lives and manipulate things to her sensibilities, believes she was a born matchmaker, what she sees as her mission in life. Being a young woman of means, she doesn't feel the need to get married herself, especially in she the last single sibling left to take care of her father. Among the few who don't believe Emma has any business matchmaking or had anything to do with the Westons' union is her friend George Knightley, the two who see themselves more as brother and sister in their respective siblings being married to each other. Emma's matchmaking sights are set on Philip Elton, the local clergy. Who Emma believes would be his perfect match is her friend Harriet Smith, an indecisive woman who in some respects trusts and relies on Emma's opinion on matters of the heart, despite Miss Smith already having a potential suitor of sorts in the form of hardworking farmer Robert Martin. Emma's own affairs of the heart somewhat change with the arrival on the scene of Mr. Weston's handsome and charming son, Frank Churchill, who does show interest in her. But as one thing after another goes awry in Emma's manipulations, she has to wonder if her thoughts about her own potential romance are equally as misguided.
